This is a very in depth and comprehensive care sheet on the general care and health of crested geckos. Please note that it represents my opinions and is based on my own research of the topic. If you disagree with anything within the care sheet please get in contact with me. If you would like to add to it, again please get in touch.
Crested geckos (Rhacodactylus ciliatus) are hardy animals, and make good pets for the beginner. They originate in New Caledonia and grow to approximately 10" long. As they have been discovered recently, their longevity is still unknown but specimens have been kept for 10 years so far, and they are estimated to live for approximately 20 years.
They are highly arboreal, spending much of their time in the trees, and make a distinct barking sound at night when they are most active. They also make a series of clicks or growls. Like many other geckos, they have sticky pads on their feet which allow them to scale walls, however unlike other geckos they also have one more pad on their tail. This affords them some additional manoeuvrability. If threatened they are able to leap in a similar manner the frogs in an attempt to escape.
There are a lot of good care sheets on the internet and I recommend you read a few to get a good range of information before
starting out. Given the proper care they can live for many years, so be prepared for the commitment. Use the links at the top
to navigate the site and feel free to contact me with any suggestions for the site or with any questions you may have. I will be updating and adding to it regularly. Use the links on the left to get started.
