Shedding
It can be difficult to tell if your spider is ill, and in many cases it would seem there is little to be done. The only thing I will mention here is the process of shedding. If you feel that your tarantula may be ill, take it to a vet and have it checked out. I would like to add to this page, so if you can provide me with any reliable information regarding one or more health issues of this species please get in touch.
Common Problems and Cures
Shedding occurs every month until they reach adult size and their growing slows down. At this point they will start to shed only a few times a year. These animals never stop growing, although the rate slows significantly after about 5" in size.
When curly haired tarantulas are about to molt there will be a number of bald patches on their abdomen, and the skin in these areas will be black instead of brown. At this point, ensure the humidity of the enclosure is correct (70-80%) and leave it in peace. They will shed their skin in their own time, and you should check to make sure it went smoothly. If they retained shed, this is a sign that your humidity levels are too low and you can try raising them to allow them to remove the rest of the skin. If it still will not loosen, take the spider to a vet.
