This is a very in depth and comprehensive care sheet on the general care and health of Frilled Dragons. Please note that it represents my opinions and is based on my own research of the topic. If you disagree with anything within the care sheet please get in contact with me. If you would like to add to it, again please get in touch.
Frilled Dragons, or Frilled Lizards, come from the family Chlamydosaurus kingii, and originate in Australia and New guinea. A medium sized lizard, they grow to about 30". Although much larger than bearded dragons, they are as easy to keep and can be quite docile with gentle acclimation. Being Diurnal, they are active during the day and have very attractive personalities. Curious, inquisitive, active and smart they are entertaining to watch and great fun for kids to observe.
The main feature of these lizards is, of course, the frill. it normally lies flat along the body, but when startled or angry they will open their mouths and extend the frill, which can reach 12 inches across, in an attempt to intimidate. It is thought that the frill is directly connected to muscles in the jaw, as it will flutter slightly as they eat. The frill is also used in some cases to dissipate body heat.
There are a lot of good care sheets on the internet and I recommend you read a few to get a good range of information before
starting out. Given the proper care they can live for many years, so be prepared for the commitment. Use the links at the top
to navigate the site and feel free to contact me with any suggestions for the site or with any questions you may have.
I will be updating and adding to it regularly. Use the links on the left to get started.
