This is a very in depth and comprehensive care sheet on the general care and health of Red-Eared Sliders. Please note that it represents my opinions and is based on my own research of the topic. If you disagree with anything within the care sheet please get in contact with me. If you would like to add to it, again please get in touch.
Red Eared Slider turtles (Trachemys Scripta Elegans) originate in the Southern United States, and only began being kept as pets in the 1960's. In the wild they live in slow moving water such as rivers, streams, ponds or lakes and get their name from they way they will slide off rocks or branches into the water when threatened or scared. They typically live between 25-45 years in captivity so careful thought must be givin to how you will care form them in the long term.
It is actually illegal in some states to sell them before the length of the carapace reaches 4", this was to prevent mass distrbution and reduce the salmonella risks associated with them. Because of these risks, they are not ideal pets for children although the chance of becoming ill is next to none if proper hygene standards are maintained.
There are a lot of good care sheets on the internet and I recommend you read a few to get a good range of information before
starting out. Given the proper care they can live for many years, so be prepared for the commitment. Use the links at the top
to navigate the site and feel free to contact me with any suggestions for the site or with any questions you may have.
I will be updating and adding to it regularly. Use the links on the left to get started.
